Breast Reduction

Having very large breasts can cause pain, limit women’s activities or clothing choices, or cause them to feel ashamed and even disappointed about their appearance.

THE operation

Even breastfeeding is likely to be hampered by the existence of an extremely large breast, as despite what one would think, the massive gland is not larger but is instead compressed by the hyperplastic interstitial fibrous tissue.

Breast reduction is the procedure in which a reduction in the size of the breasts is performed and can offer, among other things:

The incisions of the operation are either around the nipple together with a vertical incision up to the base of the breast (submastric crease), or in an “anchor” shape (around the nipple, vertical and along the submastric crease).

The choice is made according to the specific characteristics of each breast.

Although breast reduction surgery is a procedure that has been performed for many years in plastic surgery, there are new techniques and additional steps that can dramatically improve the final aesthetic result.

The use of only a circum vertical reduction with the elimination of the horizontal submast section is an important development. By applying the basic tenets of fatequalization, borrowed from modern liposuction, we can reduce the number of incisions, at least in most breasts.

The use of autologous fat in other cases can refine the final shape while maintaining a relatively full upper pole despite the overall reduction in volume.

During the procedure, massive gland and fat is removed, as well as excess skin, resulting in smaller and lighter breasts. Also, by removing parts of the breast where statistically there is the highest chance of malignancy, such as the lateral and lower parts, we can reduce the overall chance of carcinogenesis.

At the end of the operation, a special brace is placed, which must remain in place for a month.

Pain after the operation is tolerable and is adequately treated with simple painkillers. There may also be swelling or some bruising, but these symptoms subside in the next few days. In addition, in the first few weeks after the procedure, there may be a numbness in the nipple area, which subsides after a few weeks.

Return to work in most cases takes place about 15 days after surgery, while sports activities are allowed after the fourth week.

The beneficial effects of breast reduction are immediately and so strongly felt that these women are often the most satisfied and satisfied patients of a plastic surgeon.

The final shape of the breast as well as its final position become distinct about 5-6 months after the surgery. The postoperative scars improve continuously within the first year and are barely discernible at the end of this period. This shape is maintained for many years and in any case the effect of gravity on it will be much less, as the weight of the new breast is significantly reduced.
